Germany: Anti-Islamic attacks against 2 Mosques 2 weeks after stabbing a teen

Attackers threw rocks at a mosque in the central German city of Kassel on Sunday while some 50 Mushafs/Qurans were damaged in another attack on a mosque in northwest Bremen. The Central Mosque in Kassel was attacked early Sunday by unidentified criminals.

Kassel Central Mosque Foundation Chairman Seyfettin Eryörük said that the mosque was targeted with rocks at a time when no one was in the building, adding that the windows were broken in the attack.

The Kassel Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the attack.

The same mosque was attacked by PKK sympathizers in previous years and the perpetrators of the incident were not apprehended.

Meanwhile, 50 Mushafs/Qurans in Rahman Mosque in Germany’s Bremen were damaged by attackers who threw some of the holy books into the toilet.

Muslims living in the city expressed their sorrow over the anti-Muslim attack, urging authorities forces to take action. The attack came less than two weeks after a man shouting anti-Muslim slurs on a Bremen tram stabbed a 16-year-old teen in the neck with a knife.

Bremen State Deputy of the Christian Democratic Union Party (CDU) Oğuzhan Yazıcı told Anadolu Agency that he strongly condemns the ugly attack targeting Rahman Mosque, which operates under the Bremen Islamic Council.

“After the news of the stabbing of a Muslim teenager last week, we now receive news that the Holy Quran has been destroyed. Muslims from Bremen is very nervous and anxious. Like synagogues, mosques should be well protected by the state,” Yazıcı said, adding that the government should take these events more seriously and develop persistent measures against hostility toward Muslims.

German police said Wednesday that the attacker who stabbed the Muslim teenager in Bremen on May 31 had been arrested. The teen suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his neck and is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Anti-Muslim attacks have been on the rise in Germany in recent years, fueled by propaganda from far-right parties, which have exploited fears over the refugee crisis and terrorism.

Police recorded 813 hate crimes against Muslims last year. At least 54 Muslims were injured in the attacks, which were carried out mostly by far-right extremists.

Germany, a country of over 81 million people, has the second-largest Muslim population in Western Europe after France. Among the country’s nearly 4.7 million Muslims, 3 million are of Turkish origin. Many Turkish origin Germans are second- and third-generation German-born citizens of Turkish descent whose grandparents moved to the country during the 1960s.

German schools need more Islamic classes.

German schools need more Islamic classes.

In Germany, almost all education policy is determined at state level, and each state has a different approach to teaching religion — some states allow input from churches or religious organizations, others administer everything through the state, while two, Hamburg and Bremen, only have unified religious lessons that include different faiths.

Meanwhile, in all eastern German states except Berlin, there is no Islam option in religious classes at all.

A new study has found that 54,000 high school students at 800 schools in Germany receive Islam religion lessons — but 10 times as many would be interested.

Not enough German high school students receive Islam religion lessons, according to a new study by the media info service Mediendienst Integration.

But this is still much less than the 580,000 students who would potentially be interested in such lessons, a number that came out of a 2008 report entitled “Muslim Life in Germany” carried out by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). Given that this survey was carried out before the recent refugee influx into Germany, that figure is likely to be even higher now. Though exact figures are not known, Rauf Ceylan, professor for contemporary Islamic studies at the University of Osnabrück, believes the number of Muslim children aged six to 18 at German schools is around 750,000 to 800,000.

Musa Bagrac, an Islamic studies teacher in Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia, and chairman of the association of Islam studies teachers, which helps shape the religious curriculum in the state, argued that German Muslim students had a constitutional right to attend Islamic religious classes guided by religious associations, and that ethics classes were only intended for those who described themselves as non-religious. “Our association works from the German constitution, which protects religious studies as a subject in school,” he said.

He was referring to Article 7 of Germany’s Basic Law, which includes a paragraph that has created a lot of legal paperwork in recent decades: “Religious instruction shall form part of the regular curriculum in state schools, with the exception of non-denominational schools. Without prejudice to the state’s right of supervision, religious instruction shall be given in accordance with the tenets of the religious community concerned.”

Extremists burn a mosque in Berlin

Extremists burn a mosque in Berlin

Gunmen set fire to a mosque in the German capital of Berlin on Saturday night to Sunday.

“Witnesses saw three masked people pouring flammable materials into the mosque,” said Perm Turk, supervisor of the Kuja Sinan mosque, which is headed by the head of Turkish religious affairs in the Rhinkendorf district of Berlin, in an interview with Anadolu.

Turk told the Turkish news agency that the attackers threw flammable material after midnight last night and fled, pointing out that the mosque was completely burned and was not fit to perform prayers.

For its part, said German police that the attack on the mosque was carried out by one of the broken windows, pointing out that the investigations are still underway.

Local media reported that about 60 firefighters were involved in the fire.

Media reports indicated that the police were studying the hypothesis of carrying out the attack for political reasons, pointing out that the attack could be an outlet by national activists extremists or members of the Turkish community.

German terrorist carried out bomb attack then blamed Muslims

German terrorist carried out bomb attack then blamed Muslims

Police confirmed on Friday morning that a police tactical response unit had arrested a terrorist named only as ‘Sergej W’ in the Tuebingen area, 30km south of the city of Stuttgart and 450km south of Dortmund.

He has been charged with attempted murder, causing an explosion and serious bodily harm, police said.

After dismissing the Islamist extremist link, prosecutors accused the man of carrying out the attack in order to gain financially.

The Dortmund team bus was targeted with three bombs after it left a hotel to travel to the Westfalenstadion for the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Monaco. Defender Marc Bartra and a policeman were injured in the blasts, which saw the match postponed until the next day.

Germany: 91 mosques attacked in 2016 !

The German government says 91 mosques were attacked in the country in 2016.

The interior ministry said in a report late Friday that most attacks — 21 of them— took place in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which is the country’s most populous state with a high number of Muslim immigrants.

The report did not detail how badly the different mosques were vandalized. However, it said police identified suspects in 12 cases and made one arrest.

Attacks on mosques and Muslim migrants have been on the rise since the arrival of some 890,000 asylum-seekers in 2015 caused a backlash and anti-Muslim sentiment in some parts of German society.
