Extremist Hollande :France has ‘problem with Islam’

France has a “problem with Islam” and there is “too much” unwanted immigration, François Hollande has acknowledged in an explosive new book in which the Socialist president controversially claims that “the veiled woman of today” will tomorrow become France’s national icon, Marianne.

Over the course of 61 sit-down interviews and Elysée dinners with two investigative journalists, the French leader issues a string of extraordinarily unguarded comments on everything from Islam, football, “cowardly” judges, Nicolas Sarkozy “the little De Gaulle” and his tangled relationships with women.

Perhaps the most controversial passages are on immigration and Islam, in which Mr Hollande tells authors Gérard David and Fabrice Lhomme: “I there think there are too many arrivals, of immigration that shouldn’t be there.”

In another blunt comment, Mr Hollande says: “The fact that there is a problem [in France] with Islam is true. Nobody doubts that.”

“It’s not Islam itself that poses a problem for being a religion that dangerous for the Republic but because it wants to assert itself as a religion inside the French Republic,” he tells the authors.

Asked about the French Right’s obsession with national identity and the Muslim veil, Mr Hollande controversially responds: “The veiled woman of today will become France’s Marianne [national icon] of tomorrow.”

The ambiguous comments were interpreted by some on the Right as Hollande suggesting that the national symbol may become a woman in a burka, but Mr Hollande said that he meant he wanted to see Muslim women “free” from the veil.

“If we manage to provide the right conditions for her to flourish she will free herself from her veil and become French, while still remaining a believer if she wants to be, capable of carrying forth an ideal,” he says.

“Ultimately, what bet are we making? It is that this woman will prefer freedom to slavery, that the veil can be a form of protection for her but that tomorrow she won’t need it to feel reassurance about her presence in society.”

The comment sparked an angry reaction from Laurent Wauquiez, interim president of the opposition centre-Right Republicans party, who accused Mr Hollande of being “willing to barter this symbol of the French Republic for political Islam.”

“This is taking as a given the idea of selling off on the cheap the most powerful symbols of the French Republic,” he said.

Extremist Jews attack pro-Palestinian demonstrators in streets of Paris

PARIS – Shocking images emerged on Tuesday of vigilantes brandishing iron bars and cans of pepper spray while attacking pro-Palestinian demonstrators on the streets of Paris over the weekend.

The images, shot in the French capital on Sunday, show around 150 mainly young men chanting racist slogans as they went on the rampage.

It came as French President Francois Hollande warned that he did not want to see ‘the Israeli-Palestinian conflict imported into France.”

But a video shot close to the Place de la Bastille on Sunday, and verified by police before being posted on YouTube, suggests that the pro-Israel groups, thought to be linked to the extremist Jewish Defence League (LDJ), are in fact attacking the protesters.

It will cause concern in moderate Jewish communities around Europe, especially in Britain, where the Israeli bombardments of Palestinians in Gaza have come in for huge criticism.

While security guards regularly defend synagogues and other Jewish sites in cities like London, vigilante groups would be banned.

In Paris, CRS riot police do not make a single arrest among the gang despite their open fighting in broad daylight.

Members can be heard chanting ‘****-you Palestine’ as they smash up chairs and metal tables to be used as missiles.

Gas canisters, pepper spray, metal bars and wooden sticks are used by the vigilantes, some of whom are wearing crash helmets.

They run through the streets towards pro-Palestinian demonstrators, and skirmishes break out while the police stand by.

When the gang runs back towards police lines, there is no attempt to arrest any of them. In contrast, pro-Palestinian demonstrators were later accused of trying to break into synagogues, and six of them were arrested.

“French people of Muslim origin should be protected by the law when demonstrating. They should not be attacked by radical groups like the LDJ.”

Local Jewish community leader Joel Mergei accused anti-Israel protestors of reaching a ‘new low’.

An LDJ source insisted that the gang members pictured were ‘defending’ the Jewish community in Paris.

France: Pregnant Muslim woman loses baby after veil attack

A pregnant Muslim woman who was allegedly attacked in the suburbs of Paris by two ‘skinheads’ for wearing an Islamic face veil has suffered a miscarriage, it was reported on Tuesday.

According to reports in the French media, the woman, who was four months pregnant, was assaulted in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil on June 13th.

On Monday, the 21-year-old’s lawyer Hosni Maati told AFP that the woman had since suffered a miscarriage.

“Her husband called me this afternoon. She lost the baby,” the lawyer said, before adding that the family were devastated by the tragedy and would not be making any further comment.

A police source involved in the investigation also confirmed the miscarriage to AFP but did not confirm that the attack was the cause of her losing the baby.

In reporting the attack to police she described how she was set upon on Thursday morning by two men in the middle of the street, just after she had finished talking to her mother on the telephone.

She initially blamed the attack on two “skinheads”, saying the two men “ripped the veil” from her head and tore part of her clothing.

The prosecutor for Pointoise, Yves Jannier, also said the woman had been kicked in the hip before she managed to flee.

French daily Le Parisien said police sources had some concerns over “inconsistencies” in her account.

A contentious law banning the wearing in public of the full Muslim face veil, the niqab, was introduced in France in 2010. It did not however forbid the wearing of the hijab headscarf.

The alleged assault on the woman came just three weeks after another veiled Muslim woman in Argenteuil was targeted in a similar manner.

And last week, Muslims in the neighbourhood clashed with police after officers attempted to arrest a woman in the street who was wearing the full Islamic veil in public.

According to Le Parisien, officers “were attacked. They were insulted and beaten, including punches”. Police sources said they were forced to use tear gas to disperse the angry crowd.

In a statement the Collective against Islamophobia in France (CCIF) said everything would be done to “protect the rights of the victim”.

“We appeal to the authorities that their investigation into this incident is carried out quickly and that strong measures are taken to ensure justice,” the statement added.

The collective also called on residents of Argenteuil to show “restraint and calm” despite their “inevitable anger” over what happened.

The organisation also warned politicians against trying to use the Muslim community as a political pawn during next year’s local elections.

And the Coalition against Racism and Islamophobia expressed “condolences and solidarity with the family” and its “concern and great anger over the tragedy” in a statement sent to AFP on Monday.

“The wave of attacks and Islamophobic incidents require a strong and uncompromising response from the government, which must express its solidarity with all victims, not just those which the interior minister deems worthy to receive,” the statement added.

More in France Are Turning to Islam, Challenging a Nation’s Idea of Itself

Agnes Dherbeys for The New York Times

The Sahaba mosque in Créteil, a Paris suburb.

Every year about 150 Muslim conversion ceremonies are performed in the snow-white structure of the Sahaba mosque in Créteil, with its intricate mosaics and a stunning 81-foot minaret, built in 2008 and a symbol of Islam’s growing presence in France.

Among those who come here for Friday Prayer are numerous young former Roman Catholics, wearing the traditional Muslim prayer cap and long robe.

France attack muslims in Mali !

We ask God to protect muslim brothers, sisters, children, wives and elderly from the brutal invasion.

Mali Islamists gain ground despite French fighting – News-Sentinel.com.

Ludovica Iaccino commented on the barbaric attack on muslims in Mali under the title “The first terrorists are you“:

Killing people to impede them to kill other people seems the only solution we are capable of. France and many other countries should stop engaging wars and killing innocents, hiding themselves behind the excuse of fighting against terrorism. It lacks of credibility: you are not different from the terrorists you bombard.

On Jan. 20, photographer Issouf Sanogo snapped a hallucinant photo of a French soldier in Niono, Mali, wearing goggles and a black mask depicting a grinning skeleton — an image that reminded many of Ghost, a character from the video game “Call of Duty,” AFP notes.

Human Rights Watch said on Saturday that it has received reports of serious abuses by the Malian army against Tuaregs and Arabs in Niono. “We urge the Malian authorities, as well as the French and (West African) soldiers/authorities to do their utmost to ensure the protection of all civilians,”

French extremists storm a mosque

Dozens of far-right extremists have stormed the construction site of a mosque in western France to show their hostility toward it and denounce immigration that has brought millions of Muslims into the country.

Regional prefect Yves Dassonville said about 70 protesters traveled from around France for Saturday morning’s demonstration in the city of Poitiers.

He said the protesters, convened by a group called “Coordination Identitaire,” brandished banners, scaled the roof, and carried tents and electric generators for the protest starting shortly before dawn. Muslim leaders said they disrupted a prayer in the still-unfinished building.

Dassonville said that after police arrived, the protesters dispersed without resistance. Three were detained to face accusations of “incitement of racial hatred” and damage to property.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls denounced a “hateful and inadmissible provocation.”

Associated Press, 20 October 2012

The banner hung from the roof of the mosque carries the slogan “732 Génération Identitaire”, a reference to the year 732 when Charles Martel stopped the advance of Muslim troops north of Poitiers at the Battle of Tours. A statement by the far-right organisation who organised the occupation can be consulted here.
